What's Inside:
Whole Foods:
Good food lies at the heart of our health. We see gathering to cook and share food as a way of connecting to the energy of the earth, healing our bodies, and renewing ties to family and friends that are sometimes lost in the sheer busyness of our lives. We feature grains, vegetable, fruits, roots, nuts, and spices-foods that feed the body and soul. We explore their pleasures and their benefits, as well as how to prepare them and eat them in balance. We seek out recipes that are simple enough to coax us into trying unfamiliar foods or ways of preparation, which are also tasty enough to become personal favorites. We realize that preparing fresh food takes time, but, in recognition of how far our culture has strayed from this tradition, we offer whatever useful shortcuts we can find.
Treading Lightly:
Shopping can swallow large chunks of the precious time that we would rather spend with friends, family, and ourselves. Often choices made-in self-defense and out of convenience-do not reflect our real desire to live more responsibly. Environmental products, processes, and services that suit a sustainable lifestyle are already available and waiting to be found. We simplify the search by providing the facts and our favorite earth-friendly alternatives.
From the Ground Up:
To watch a child suddenly scramble into the bean patch, and come out chomping a pod and clutching a fistful of reserves, is to know where nutrition can be regained. Digging hands into rich earth and coaxing seedlings into wild green growth is a joyous occupation for the long-time gardener, and an unfathomable mystery to those of us who believe that our thumbs are anything but emerald. We offer straight facts about earth-friendly gardening at its basic best: planning, soil preparation, seed gathering and acquiring, planting, tending, harvesting, and preparing the earth for the next season. We share with you our passion for growing things.
Everything Herbal:
Not long ago, our entire medical practice depended on solutions found readily available in nature. We are fortunate that the knowledge of health and healing properties of herbs and other plants is still available, preserved by the work of naturalists and herbalists who pass it on to us.
A Balance of Health:
When bodies are out of balance, it is their nature to seek return to a steady state through good food, clean water, plenty of motion, and a clear mind. When something is lacking, guidance is available from many medical and metaphysical traditions. We share accurate information on common health disruptors-as well as how they flow with the seasons-and practical alternatives for returning to balanced health.
In Print & on the Screen:
We review books and movies of inspiration-ones that have made us laugh, cry, or stop in our tracks with a revelation about who we are, how we live, and where we would like to go from here. There is so much quality print and cinema out there; much of it goes unnoticed without a tip from a friend.
Life Out Loud:
Parenting cracks you open, right to the heart, and sews you back together again. Few topics are as under-explored as the range of emotion that accompanies this incredible journey. From birth, through the ages and stages of a child's life and all the many debates along the way, there is no one answer. Whether to school or vaccinate, set firmer boundaries or offer freedom of choice is a matter each family works out in their own unique way. As we navigate the course, much is made simpler with the support that comes from sharing our stories. An honest look into how children shape us-be it raw or sweet-is a gift worth the giving.
With our Hands:
As the pace of society and technology tend to spiral ever upwards, we honor the ability and desire of those who choose to slow their work and hone their craft. Artisan skills, craftsman quality, and unique products created by hand are worth their price. Time spent in this practice can be a deep meditation. We are as interested in what draws craftspeople to their craft, and to how their art shapes them, as we are in the beauty of their final piece. We provide practical information about how a craft (or a specific project) is done, how a beginner could get started and resources that might help them to learn about it. We pass on ways that artists consider the environment within their particular work and how sustainability issues affect their field in general.
Looking Within:
Three things seem clear: all creatures are good at their essence; how far we stray from that center is a matter of our life experiences; patterns thrive in isolation. We are looking for ways to understand our patterns-how they formed, how we play them out-and to acknowledge them and make healthier choices. All spiritual paths that have love as their center lead to the same place. We share information from a variety of paths, as we explore aspects of our souls and personalities.
This Spinning Earth:
We could fill the oceans with the misinformation and lack of guidance we experience in our day-to-day lives regarding the earth: her current level of health, the effect of our habits, how far things have progressed down the path, and where we can go from here. Simple changes in what we do, how we live, and what we purchase have wide-ranging effects. We share the facts about our environment and ways of living, told as plainly as possible. We seek to go from there into the realm of solution. We share a view that the earth was designed to return to balance just like our bodies. Accurate information is needed; good direction is essential; small steps towards positive change are encouraged.
In Community:
The awareness of our impact on each other is clearer every day as information about cultures and neighborhoods once distant becomes more accessible; reports of injustice and inequality abound. What is missing is information about the innumerable ways communities are already healing and the people who are making these changes happen. We share stories about places near and far where people are making a difference in their own lives and the lives of their neighbors-inspirational stories that move us beyond the dread and give us the courage to reach out in our own way.
