Motherwort Vinegar — A Website Exclusive
Kimberly Gallagher, M.Ed
My mentor, Sally King at RavenCroft Garden, says to reach for motherwort "when the mother needs mothering." Motherwort provides strength, comfort and calming during times of stress. It eases transitions, both daily and life-altering, such as childbirth and menopause. For a wonderful way to add motherwort to your meals, try this recipe from my friend Carla:
Chop up the fresh motherwort plant material (leaves, stem and flowers). Loosely pack a mason jar with the plant material and add apple cider vinegar, fully covering the plant material. Cap the jar with a plastic lid. Stir a couple times a day for the first week and add more vinegar as needed to be sure the plant material remains covered. Let sit for about 6 weeks. Strain and it's ready to use.
Add to stir fries, salad dressings, or take it by the spoonful. It is very bitter, so use sparingly or in combination with sweeter ingredients.
Enjoy!
